Not Just a College Student

For the last four years, I’ve been a college student.

Well, that’s what I used to think. You see, I had this whole post idea in my head planned out. I knew what I wanted to say. I knew how I wanted it to go.

But then I wrote that first sentence and realized I wasn’t just a college student; I was a student-journalist.

Those two words made all the difference. The entirety of my post changed.

You see, just as I’m not just a college student, you’re not just a college student. You are what you put into your time at school.

I’m a student-journalist thanks to the time I’ve put into the University of Florida’s College of Journalism and Communication’s newsroom.

I’m a student-journalist thanks to the countless number of people I have met across North Central Florida that allowed for me to share their stories.

I’m a student-journalist thanks to the experiences and projects I have spent hours working on.

But most importantly, I’m a student-journalist because of the passion I have to do all of the above and then some to provide true and honest information for those interest.

You see, what I came here tonight to tell you is that you’re not just a college student. You were not just a college student.

You are a student-engineer.

You are an up-and-coming teacher.

You are an aspiring doctor.

You are whatever you put into your college experience.

And you deserve to own it.

So do so.
